← IL ILLINOIS RIVER SENECA IL Triple Blaze →

Description

Visiting Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area today is much like seeing Illinois as it was over a century ago, when prairie covered nearly all of the state. Big bluestem, Indian grass and switchgrass thrive here, as do broad-leafed flowering plants known as forbs. At times the grasses can reach 8 to 12 feet in height. All the seasons have unique beauty to behold at the Goose Lake Prairie. The area offers 7 miles of hiking trails to view the Goose Lake Prairie in all its glory. Depending on the route you choose trails can be from 1 to 3.5 miles. Different loops offer different levels of difficulty. The Tall Grass Nature Trails takes you through the prairie with the park's tallest grasses. The Sagashka Trail lets you see many different habitats from marshland to farmland. The Prairie View Trail is a moderate level trail that guides you through prairie and farmland. Picnicking amenities are also available.
